This pandemic has already so many layers to unpack you could study them for the rest of your life. I already did a Twitter summary back when the topic wasn’t on everyone’s agenda. Now that the daily news is completely overtaken by infection and death numbers we can dive deeper into some of the implications.

Trump will win the second term

Unfortunately it seems like this event elevates Trump to being a wartime president: “Historically, presidents have done very well in wartime reelections.” As usual, Trump handled the issue incompetently and racist. But China is the perfect scapegoat:

• Western folks don’t “get” the culture
• Economic anxiety about China’s rise is already common
• The China / WHO connection is indeed very troublesome
• China re-opened their wet markets

It seems to be working for him.
